Valentines Family Night

21st Century Community Learning Center

Eclectic Middle School

EMS Assistant Principal Marcia Stephens greeted parents, students, teachers and guests gathered in the EMS Gymnasium February 12 for a delightful celebration honoring the parents of students enrolled in the 21st Century Community Learning Center, an after school enrichment program. The gym was decorated with hearts and flowers, with pink table cloths and valentines centerpieces made by the students.

After a welcome by student Joseph Barron, highlights of the evening included the recognition of Good Citizenship award winners by Mistress of Ceremonies "Vanna White," portrayed by EMS teacher Mrs. Moncrief. Elizabeth Watkins and Joseph Barron were introduced as the students who best exemplified the traits and behaviors of a model citizen. The presentation was followed by a delightful video of students offering their heartfelt appreciation to their parents for the love and support their parents give them, and their appreciation for being enrolled in the 21st Century program. The video was prepared by EMS Mrs. Stephens, and included pictures of both students and parents.

Following the video, "Vanna (Moncrief) White" led the group in various competitions involving teams of students and adults who had to supply the names of the states featured on a map of the United States. Winners of this competition were EMS student D.J. Evans and his grandmother, Mrs. Betty Evans. The most hotly contested competition was that of the EMS version of "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader." EMS teacher, Mrs. Kendal Hanson, along with a team of other teachers, prepared the challenging questions in math, science, social studies and English. Winner was Mrs. Chari Adamson, mother of EMS student Edward Calhoun, while the runner-up spot was claimed by Jonathan Garret, who is an EMS fifth grader!

EMS student Edward Calhoun offered grace before students and guests finished the evening festivities with a delicious barbeque dinner with all the trimmings, catered by Smokin' S Barbeque.

The 21st Century Community Learning Center provides academic reinforcement, physical activity, enrichment experiences in a variety of areas, homework assistance, and opportunities for the enhancement of social skills.

The program will offer a two-week summer program featuring several educational field trips, including trips to the Chattanooga Aquarium and a riverboat cruise.
